‘Gentle words are a tree of life; a deceitful tongue crushes the spirit.’ Proverbs 15:4(NLT)
‘It’s not what goes into your mouth that defiles you; you are defiled by the words that come out of your mouth.”’ Matthew 15:11(NLT)
‘And “don’t sin by letting anger control you.” Don’t let the sun go down while you are still angry, So stop telling lies. Let us tell our neighbors the truth, for we are all parts of the same body. for anger gives a foothold to the devil. If you are a thief, quit stealing. Instead, use your hands for good hard work, and then give generously to others in need. Don’t use foul or abusive language. Let everything you say be good and helpful, so that your words will be an encouragement to those who hear them. And do not bring sorrow to God’s Holy Spirit by the way you live. Remember, he has identified you as his own, guaranteeing that you will be saved on the day of redemption. Get rid of all bitterness, rage, anger, harsh words, and slander, as well as all types of evil behavior. Instead, be kind to each other, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, just as God through Christ has forgiven you.’ Ephesians 4:25-32(NLT)
Ephesians warns us about the effect emotions play on words and actions. Paul tells us to be angry, but do not sin (Eph 4:26). This quote of Psalm 4:4 is a reminder for us to keep our emotions within ourselves rather than to allow them to control our actions. Our words are to be a mechanism to build up, rather than tear down.
Taking time to allow the Spirit to speak to us and through us before responding, especially when we feel overwhelmed, helps us answer in gentleness. By doing this, we will utter words of grace rather than disfavor.
How have emotions driven your responses to others in the past? What is a way you can prevent fear from ruling your words in the future? God desires us to be vessels of His love and mercy. Our mouths are a primary avenue for us to deliver His message to the world.
Father God, Thank You for Your grace. Help my words speak Your grace to the world around me every day. I pray that You will help me keep my emotions in check, so I might accurately reflect You in my life. Forgive me for the times when I have allowed fear to dominate my words. Amen.
